Organizing Actions in Photoshop

Do you have Photoshop CS6 (or older versions) and your actions palette is a mess of actions? There is an easy way to organize them so you can find the actions you want, and make it easier for saving and loading in new Photoshop versions when you upgrade.

What is the secret? Sets.

Below is an example of my Everyday Essentials set. It is simply a top-level folder name, so-to-speak, with all the individual actions nested under it.

For the purpose of this tutorial, I am using the fabulous CoffeeShop‘s actions. Rita, who is a friend of mine, makes beautiful actions, which are always free, but they are released one at a time as she makes them. This means you have a lot of individual actions, which can quickly add up.

In the video below I show how to load actions in Photoshop CS, then how to create a set and move actions to it.

You will go from having many individual actions, to having one set with many actions under it.

If you are reading this post in a blog reader or via email, you can view the video by clicking here.

Now that homeschooling is back in full swing, I will show less screen prints and rely more on video because it’s simply more time-efficient for me.

  1. Thank you Amanda!

Question for you…I have CS5 and most of the actions I load into CS5 do not show when I’m processing if I load the images from Bridge. However, if I open an image from My Pictures, they will all show. Can you shed any light on this? Thanks.

  2. Amanda, I love your blog…it’s my go to place for quick tips and info. I’m wondering if you can help out. When I’m ready to save my edited photoshop CS6 photo with layers… how can I save it (with the layers) and send it to clients or post it on my blog? Thank you, for your help!
