Fundraiser For My In-Laws

On May 2nd, life changed…drastically and permanently. Around 7:40 AM, my next door neighbor, Magali, was taking her two children and my niece to school. She accidentally pulled out in front of a 18 wheeler truck, killing her and her 6 year old son, Abner, and critically injuring her 9 year old daughter, Magalita, and my 6 year old niece, Delanie. The two girls were air-lifted to a children’s hospital over an hour away and have been there since.

Magalita, who was sitting behind her mother, had a concussion, shattered jaw, broken ribs, bruised lung and lacerated liver. Delanie, who was in the back, right passenger seat, had a concussion, bleeding in the brain, a diffuse axonal brain injury, bruised lung, tears on her spleen and liver, and a severely broken leg.

I have been writing about their recovery at a Caring Bridge site, as well as sharing pictures of them and now videos. Magalita has recovered very well and we hope will be released from the hospital next week. Delanie, on the other hand, just moved out of the pediatric intensive care  unit on Thursday; her road to recovery has been much longer because of her brain injury. Magalita has a different, and probably longer recovery to start – that of dealing with her mother and brother’s deaths.

As soon as they have Delanie more stable, they will be transporting her to an in-patient rehabilitation center in Charlotte, North Carolina, about 2.5 hours from where we live.

My in-laws, David and Linda, have raised Delanie since she was about one year old, and it is Linda who will be going with Delanie to the rehab center. I would like to get an iPad for her to use, to email her family and friends, pay bills online, make videos of Delanie, enable Delanie to do web-cam chats with her brother and cousins.

This is where the fundraiser comes in. I am hoping to raise enough money to pay for the iPad for Linda and Delanie, but I am not just asking people to donate, I want you to get something too. So, I put together a package of actions and coupon codes from me and two other vendors, and the value of that package will exceed the cost of it.

The packet I am selling for the fundraiser costs $10, and purchasers receive:

  • 5 new, custom actions (both PSE and PS) from Everyday Elements
  • $10 coupon code off anything at Everyday Elements
  • $7.50 coupon code from Pretty Presets (beautiful ACR and LR presets)

Editing to add that Madison will not work in PSE, no matter how many times I’ve tried to fix it. So, I added Austin to the new packets. If you are reading this after 11:30 AM EST on Monday, and  you purchase the packet, your packet has a newly revised Austin action.

Here is an example of the actions in the packet:

Now, for those who are new to photography and editing and may not be interested in actions or textures yet, I am offering another choice. I am doing two live “watch me work” sessions and the cost to attend one is just $15. The classes will each last 1.5 hours, limited to 24 attendees each and I will record them for future viewing (attendees will be sent a link to the videos). Attendees will get to see me editing pictures, and I will be explaining what I am doing as I go along, stopping now and then for questions. If you cannot attend the dates I have listed, but would like to watch the videos, there is a separate purchase for that. Two days after the workshop you will be sent the link to view the recording.

The Watch Me Work sessions are for Photoshop Elements, but if I have enough interest in Photoshop or Lightroom sessions, I will open up workshops for those as well.

If you are not interested in any of these things, but would like to donate, there are donate buttons at the bottom of the post. I will let you know how much was donated and when the funds are delivered to the different families.

Thank you all for support and help during this difficult time. I have been touched by the love and prayers so many from Everyday Elements workshops and Facebook page have given me. I really *heart* you all!!

UPDATE!! Linda has the iPad in her possession and is loving it!! I bought the 32G iPad 2 and warranty, the lime green Apple cover that snaps on and works as a stand also, and the Apple wireless keyboard for when she has a lot of typing to do. Thank you for making this possible!! The extra proceeds from the sale of the packet are going to my in-laws to help cover expenses during and after this long hospital stay. I will be going to visit them in Charlotte soon, and will buy some restaurant and gas gift cards with the money and then give them the rest in a check. The funds for Magalita (from donations and workshop/videos) will be given to Jose in the form of either a check or a Visa/MC gift card.

  2. What a great way to help! I use LR and am learning Photoshop and if you decide to do one of those I would love to participate.

  6. I’ve just purchased the fundraiser action pack…. I’m so pleased to be able to help. I’ve been checking the caring bridge site daily for updates since the accident. It is so informative and well written Amanda, it really gives a true insight into what you are all going through when tragic situations happen. I hope you get the Ipad very soon and best wishes to everyone. Off to play with my lovely new actions and fab Kim Klassen textures 🙂

  7. I shared the fundraiser on twitter, hopefully you’ll get some more donations! If you do a photoshop watch me work I’m totally interested. Let me know if you need anything in Charlotte, I’m a few minutes from the hospital.

Please change your shopping cart to allow us to process all in one session, it sent me invoice and I cannot find way to pay what I wanted to donate. I can see this being a hurdle to reaching your goal. Sending this suggestion with love.

  9. Continuing to pray for your family…and how generous of you to offer something in return for a donation. ♥

  10. Thank you for giving us a way to help the girls. I’ve kept you all in my thoughts since I heard the news. I’ve shared the link on FB, Twitter, and some FB groups I’m part of. I’m hoping you’ll have the iPad by the end of the week.

  11. My heart goes out to both of the families whose lives are forever changed by this tragic accident. Prayers are being offered for the continuing recovery of both Magalita and Delanie. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to help. Best wishes for a successful fund-raiser.

  12. I just purchased the Watch Me Work!!! I am very excited to watch you work, especially in PSE, which is what I use…and for such a fabulous (& needed) gift for Linda!

Stay strong Amanda. I know it’s hard to see when you are in the midst of the storm, but the hurdles you and your family are facing with everything surrounding the accident, will in the end create an even deeper relationship between you and the Lord.

  13. Amanda, I purchased the fundraising set but would be interested in a Lightroom tutorial. Let me know if you decide to do a class on Lightroom.

  14. Hi Amanda, I’m trying to buy the Fundraiser Packet. Is it really out of stock or am I getting an error message?

  15. Are all the packets really gone?

  16. Would love to help by getting the Fundraiser Package but it shows out of stock already 🙁 Will keep the girls in my thoughts and prayers

  17. It appears as if this is out of stock. I would be interested if you decide to offer more. Thanks….praying for the little girls, this is so nice of you to offer this.

This breaks my heart. Good luck to Delanie and Magalita in their recovery. I wish them the best! I’ve purchased the package and plan to let all my photographer friends know about it. Thank you for offering this as a way to help them.

  19. Let me know if you do LR or PS!!! Praying for your family!

  20. Thanks Amanda for putting this together. I was happy to help in this small way. Hope you had a great visit with the girls today.

  21. Mirjana says:

I just made my first purchase on your site for a fundraiser. That makes me even happier.

  22. Hi there! So touched by your story…can’t imagine the pain that the family is going through. Just wondering if Amazon or one of the other big companies might donate a Ipod for you to use so that you can use the extra $$ for your inlaws financial needs.

  23. Cheryl has kept me updated on your family and I just wanted to let you know we are continuing to pray for you all!

  24. Just bought and played with the actions, and I love them! I will be praying for your niece.

  25. Will the videos work for PSE for Mac?

  26. I have been following this since you first started posting and I pray every single day for Magalita and Delanie. A small donation has been made and I hope that you will earn enough for the iPad and much much more.

  27. Praying for the families…want to buy, went to buy and now out of stock 🙁

    • Thank you for your email Amanda. I have purchased the revised set and LOVE them. As soon as I get a few more payments in, I am coming back for another donation for the families, because these are worth FAR MORE than the $10!

  28. Amanda, you are amazing for your gifts, and I bought the watch me work video….I’m praying for you and the families..God Bless.

Hi!! I was wanting to purchase the fundraiser packet to help you out, but I’m new at the editing part of photography – so I was wondering – do I need a certain thing, like photoshop or lightroom before I can purchase and use these? I hope I have what I need to purchase these – would love to help out!!

    Thanks! 🙂

  30. Amanda,

More than happy to help and what a great way to get money for them! I hope you continue to get a great turn out for the fundraiser to help both families. I will continue to spread the word! Praying for your family and the other family.

  31. Isabelle says:

I’m really late getting here, I’m sorry… I did read about the story and I’m happy to help, even if it’s in such a small way. Prayers for their full recovery xoxo

  32. I downloaded the action set and on Madison it said “Could not complete the Channel Mixer command because the file could not be found” and on Kodiak “The command “Set” is not currently available.” Has anyone else had this problem? I have used actions a lot so I don’t think I am doing anything wrong. Any ideas? Thanks.

  33. Amanda, as always you are giving to others! You have such a good heart and I pray your fundraiser helps where needed! Thanks for the packet and coupon codes!
