Photography Book Review: Expressive Photography by Shutter Sisters

I am very excited to be sharing about this wonderful new book I recently bought that has really got my creative juices flowing. The books is Expressive Photography: The Shutter Sisters’ Guide to Shooting from the Heart by the talented group of women photographers that make up The Shutter Sisters.

Sitting down to enjoy this scrumptious book!

I first learned about the existence of Expressive Photography when I was visiting my friend Kim Klassen’s blog. Kim, if you do not already know, is a new member of The Shutter Sisters, and well deserves that honor, she is an amazing photographer.

I am digressing, aren’t I? I do that often, sorry about that.

Anyway, I was at Kim’s blog and saw a button about the book. I knew of the Shutter Sisters and have been to the site many times. So, I clicked through and was delighted to find they had just published this beautiful and affordable photography book.

One of MANY favorite images from the book.

I cannot express well enough how pleased I am with this book. First it is thorough! It covers a lot of material, man does it! And, secondly it inspire you beyond measure! Makes me want to abandon our plans for tonight and just go shooting. Lastly, after is has inspired the mess out of you, it also equips you with some of the methods used to capture the images.

To show you how much they cover in this book (and do it well), here is a list of the chapters:

  • Horizons
  • Portraiture
  • Nature
  • Spaces
  • Childhood
  • Stillness
  • Documentary
  • Creatures
  • Table
  • Togetherness

AND, it gets better…..Inside each of those chapters they have the categories of:

  • Introduction
  • Approach
  • Perspective
  • Composition
  • Lighting
  • Details
  • Processing

Seriously, it is a wonderful book.

The book is a flexible binding, so it lays nicely in your lap and the pages are of a heavy weight and have great color. I really feel like at $19, it was a steal. If you would like to purchase one, I bought mine from Amazon, but other stores may have it also, I am not sure.

And, because I *heart* it so much, I am going to give away one copy of Expressive Photography this week! Surprise! I wonder how many people didn’t realize this was a giveaway post and clicked out before getting to the bottom. I like to be sneaky like that sometimes.

To enter the giveaway simply leave a comment telling me where you are sitting when entering this giveaway (like my bed, couch, table, office, McDonalds, etc.). Weird, but it’s fun to see stuff like that. Well, as long as no one puts the bathroom. 😉

One entry per person and the giveaway ends Sunday, April 24th at 11:00 PM. Winner has one week to respond to my email, or another winner will be chosen.

GIVEAWAY IS OVER

Thank you to all who participated. I wish I could give everyone the book; it breaks my heart to have just one winner, but that is all I can afford right now. 😉

The winner was comment #109, left by Caroline.

You are definitely part of my photography education. Thank you for your informative posts on all the questions I have (I am a newbie). The little course on textures was wonderfully informative and I have taken off with textures!

  4. My laptop and I reside at my families’ dining room table. It is the center hub of our house and I can keep an eye on what everyone is up to. My kids firmly believe that I have eyes in the back of my noodle. Thanks for a chance at winning this incredible inspirational book!

  12. I am just a newbie to this area of photography. I don’t have a blog, but I am on Flickr and FB. I am sitting at my desk typing away, while cats behind me are getting into my thousand piece puzzle. Just like little toddlers, they are.

    Hi Amanda
I am sitting at my desk at 6.30am enjoying the freedom of not having to complete with my two grandchildren for the use of my PC while I catch up on my missed emails, feeds etc. Four days was enough!
The book looks terrific. I am so dispondant about my seemingly inability to improve my photos of late so need all the help I can get and naturally would love to win the book.
I have been a follower for a while now and want to thank you for your great blog –

  22. I’m sitting at my kitchen island!

  23. AJCoombs says:

    On my couch!

  24. Sigh~~I’m *trying* not to buy more books, but if I won a copy it wouldn’t count, would it? :~)
I have to admit that I have purchased two books in the last two weeks :~/ One is about my camera, a Canon G11, and the other is a Photoshop book. The G11 book seems to be well written from an instructional point of view, but I am not impressed by the quality of the photos! So I think I will buy the Shutter Sisters book, even if I don’t win it :~)
But I digress, too :~) I am sitting at my desk in my home office/craft supply room/mini photo studio!

  25. Hi Amanda! I hardly ever win anything, but I thought why not give this a shot…

I actually had time this week to catch up on all your blog posts, as I am in California, at my parents, enjoying spring break. My little one is chasing my mom (instead of me) all over their house which means I get more time to play! I am sitting in my parent’s kitchen at their dinning room table…

  26. Hello,

I’m sitting on my swing outside on my deck enjoying the only day we are not going to get rain. 🙂
It’s a gorgeous day and so quiet to read all the blogs and of course enter this great giveaway.
I would love to win that book.

  27. At the desk in our finished basement. Wish I could move the desk and desktop somewhere that got actual sunshine…

  28. Don’t you love Kim’s site? Her images just fill me with inspiration, and I was so excited to read a review of this book after having seen it via her site. So here I am, sitting in my chair under my heated blanket, with a cup of tea at hand, typing away to enter this wonderful giveaway. Did I mention my ankles are crossed? Do you think that will work the same as fingers? Maybe I’d better cross those, too…

  29. HI! I am sitting at my desk in my kitchen, where I keep my laptop about 50% of the time.

I would LOVE to win this book! I am a subscriber to the Shutter Sisters blog and they are so inspiring, so wonderful.

  38. In our home library (aka playroom).
I put this book on reserve at my library.
My rural library is hooked to many other small-town libraries 🙂
The library which has this book won’t release it to other libraries for 6 months 🙁
I’m on the reserve-list with only 5 month to go 🙂
SO glad to hear it will be worth the wait (unless I win the give-away, of course).
    Thanks for a great website.
