A Different Perspective

Last week I did my second in-person private with the sweet and lovely Susan. Needless to say, we had a blast and eat/drank/slept photography and had a thoroughly grand time. To give her a break of my four crazy kids, I took her to the big town of Saluda for a photo walk of our downtown.

Now, there is not a large variety of things to shoot on the one-block Main Street, however, by thinking “outside the box” sometimes, we were able to capture some interesting shots. My favorite was the one above, where I shot through a vine that was wrapped with white lights.

How I got the shot was to get in close behind the vine, focus on Susan and then take the shot. The lights were in the foreground and turned into beautiful little globes of light, i.e. bokeh.

I am writing this post while at the SNAP blogging conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. So often the camera I have handy is my iPhone, not my Nikon D700, so I have challenged myself to document as much of the trip as possible with the iPhone and to look for interesting shots but getting a different perspective. I will share the result on Monday, so stay tuned.

Anyway, I want to encourage you to look for a different perspective when taking pictures. Yes, sometimes there is only one or two ways to take a shot, but sometimes you can get under, over, in, out, beside, below (and all other kind of good prepositions) and it will take a shot from ho-hum to “oh my gosh, I love that!”

For those interested, I shot the above image with my Nikon D700 and Nikon 60mm f2.8 lens.
