Love That Shot Link Up

Instead of doing the Fix It Friday with I Heart Faces this week I am going to join in with Love That Shot’s link up party.

This is a shot of my second son that I took last weekend, while getting shots for my photography workshop. I didn’t meter on the right spot, so his face ended up a bit underexposed. But, I decided to rescue it for the sake of my editing attendees, to show what can be done.

This image required a good bit of selective brightening, focusing primarily on the face. 100% of the editing was done with PSE8.

Here is a before and after collage, to show what I started with:

I would love to see your picture, so link up at Love That Shot and leave me a comment with your blog address.

Also, don’t forget to enter my giveaway for a Spyder3Express calibration system.

  1. Great rescuing! The photo looks really nice, clear and so much brighter.

  2. Incredible!!! Your son is so handsome tooΓ’β„’Β₯

  3. This is probably a dumb question, but when you say you didn’t meter on the right spot, can you explain what you did wrong? I have been reading up on metering, but I really think I am missing something! πŸ™

    • Sure thing, Petra.

Okay, when spot metering, you need to make sure your camera is set to spot metering (will be an icon with a single dot). Then, get in closer to your subject and meter off the the skin.

Once you have that meter set for that area, you can back up and compose the shot. Just know that when you do, your meter will be telling you that you are over/underexposed. Ignore it and take the shot.

By metering off of the skin, I am ensuring that he is properly exposed and not worrying about the rest being too bright. In the image above I didn’t meter from his skin, so he was a bit underexposed but the background wasn’t totally blown. Had I spot metered better, he would have been brighter and the background more clipped (blown).

      Clear as mud?

  4. Thanks, Amanda. I’ve been so focused on getting things right with shutter speed, ISO and Ap., that I have only shot with eval. metering. One more thing to practice. Yippee!
Thank you for sharing. I really appreciate it πŸ™‚
