Camera Cheat Sheets – Review and Giveaway

GIVEAWAY IS OVER

WINNERS LISTED AT BOTTOM OF POST

This past weekend a sweet new photography friend I have, Jessica, introduced me to a delightful little tool for finding your way around a new camera – CheatSheet by Bert Sirkin.

We were trying to figure out a few things on her rockin’ Canon 5D and I asked her a question, like “where is such and such…” and she breaks out the CheatSheet for that model and I was all amazement. I loved it and we used it over and over during our time together.

I thought I’d share a picture of her CheatSheet from my desk, as we would take pictures of the Coke Zero bottle on my desk. (Everyday Photography past attendees will be glad to see it’s not the same old Diet Mountain Dew bottle or a water bottle).

Jessica brought her camera manual with her as well, but we were able to find the answers faster and easier on the CheatSheet than in her manual. The CheatSheet has information that is practical and necessary for using the camera, put into easy to understand format and well organized sections.

After she left I got on the computer and found out there are CheatSheets for almost all DSLR and upper-end point and shoot cameras!

Where have I been? How did I not know about these? I feel like my head has been in the sand!

Know what I did on Monday? I ordered CheatSheets for my Canon G12, the Nikon D5000, D7000, Canon Rebel T31 and Canon 60D.

These awesome little tools are packed with information front and back, laminated for durability, folds up for travel and are only $10.95 each. Well worth the price!!

Why the CheatSheets for cameras I do not have? Well, so I can help others with their cameras during my photography workshops. It brings me joy to help others learn their camera and these little sheets will help me help them.

Onto the giveaway… I am giving away two CheatSheets to two sweet Everyday Elements readers.

To enter simply tell me the camera you trying to learn and how long you’ve had it. Make sure to leave your comment on this post at the blog, not on Facebook.

  • One entry per person
  • Giveaway ends Sunday, July 31 at 11:00 PM EST
  • Winners chosen via Random.org

Winners have one week to respond to my email after which another winner(s) will be chosen. Once I have received physical addresses from the winners, I will purchase their camera’s CheatSheet at Amazon and ship to them within a week.

I decided to make it THREE winners instead of two since there were so many entries (I’m such a sucker, I know). The winning comment numbers are below, and emails to them have been sent. If you were a winner but have not received an email, check your spam/junk folder please.

#179 Annie, #22 Bridget, #268 BreeAnn

I have the Nikon D90 and have had it for a little over a year. I still find things about it I didn’t know and am still learning it’s capabilities. But a cheat sheet would make it soooo much easier to learn!!

  2. What a great idea! Why didn’t I think of this!?!?! I’ve been “learning” my camera for far too long & should really just buckle down & take a class. Unfortunately I’m an “auto” addict!!! I’m shooting with an Olympus E-410. I love the images I’ve been able to capture thus far but would love to know my camera inside & out!

  3. Danielle r says:

Cannon 5d got it 2 years ago for Christmas to take pictures of amazing baby, now toddler.

  4. I have a Nikon D5000 and I’ve had it a year and a half. I feel like I am a newbie and learning every day. Your website (as well as your fb page) often times has taught me more than all the books/articles I’ve read regarding my camera specifically. So if you recommend this cheatsheet, I completely trust your suggestion! Thanks!

  5. Donna Maness says:

A cheet sheet for my Nikon D60 would be great! I have had it for about two years and would appreciate a quick source to refer to rather than searching through the manual!

  6. Mirjana M says:

I have a Nikon D3000 and have had mine for a little more than a year. I think that a cheat sheet would make it so much easier than having to use my software, wait, and search what info I am looking for. Having the cheat sheet would save me so much time 🙂

  7. I have a Canon 40D. I recently got it stolen along with my lenses. I had a cheatsheet I had made myself that I kept in my camera bag. They stole my bag and pawned my camera and lenses. Must have ditched my bag with my home-made cheatsheet :(.

  8. Jennifer P. says:

I have the Nikon D5000 and I love it. But it stays on auto mostly unless I want to turn the flash off. 🙂 I’ve had it about a year. I hope to take a class so the cheat sheet would be so helpful. Thank you for the opportunity to win!

  11. I got my Canon Rebel T2i in April of this year – doing ok with it so far, but I have SOOOO much to learn!! Nature photography is my passion, and I find my manual cumbersome and difficult to refer to while hiking thru the woods, wading in a stream, or walking on the beach – having a cheat sheet to use in the field would be AWESOME!!!

  12. BRILLIANT!!! I finally got a proper camera- canon rebel T1i….i’ve just had it since May, and I have almost no idea what i’m doing with it!

  13. I have a nikon d90. I have only had it for about a month. I it would be really nice to have a cheatsheet so I can learn about this camera faster!

  15. Melissa Todd says:

I had no idea these cheatsheets exist!!! Sounds just what I need to figure out my camera! I have two little girls and no time to read the LONG instruction booklet that comes with the camera. lol I’d love to take a class, but that requires time, too! Anyway, my camera is the Canon Rebel T1i. Thanks for enlightening me and for the chance to win one of these cheatsheets!!

  16. heidi cesarini says:

  21. I have a Nikon D60 that I’ve been using (mostly on full auto, shame on me) since before my 2-year-old was born… Yikes! Don’t have time to memorize the manual–DEFINITELY could use a cheat sheet.

  22. I have a Nikon D40 and got it for Mother’s Day 2 years ago. I just can’t seem to have the time to get it all figured out!

  29. I am leaning on the Canon Rebel and I have only had it for about 2 months. These would be amazing!

  31. Denise O says:

I have had my Canon Rebel XTi for about 4-5 years. I do well with it & have shot several weddings (for friends); I am happy with my results. But there are things that I have never tried because I haven’t taken the time to read how to do them. A CheatSheet sounds right up my alley!

  32. Hi, found you through @bakeat350tweets on Twitter. How great would these Cheat Sheets be! I shoot on a Nikon D5000 and although I’ve got the basics down (I think!) any extra help is fantastic. Cheers

  33. Very cool. I’ve had a D7000 since April and am still sorting out what all it can do (in fact, I just bought the Field Guide which is looking great so far but way too bulky to carry into the actual field, much better on a desktop). I’d love a simple pocket guide I could leave in my camera bag!

  34. Hi,

That is so awesome! Wish I had known about this sooner. I have canon Xti Rebel (eos 400D I believe). I have had it since January 2008 and now I use it for my cake blog but I still have so many things to learn and I think this would help and my readers would appreciate as well.

  35. I have a Nikon D40, and I just started trying to shoot on manual settings… so much to learn!

  36. I just got the Nikon D3000 a month ago. My grandfather was a photographer back in the day, and I thought he would be able to help me learn how to use my camera. After fiddling with it for an hour, he told me, “Well, the only setting you will ever really want to use is the ‘Auto’- most of you pictures will turn out great that way.” I wanted to tell him that if I wanted to use the “Auto” setting I wouldn’t have gotten a DSLR! But it was sweet of him to try to help me!

  37. Deb DeMartino says:

Wow….. Thats genius! My daughter laughs at me everytime I use my camera…I need to get one and really use this camera as it was meant to be used!!!
