A list of my favorite iPhone apps

written by Beckie of beckiegkengle.com

I have a serious addiction to photography apps on my iPhone (I have like 30+ camera/editing apps)! There are SO many different ones, how do you know which ones are the best? Here’s a list of a few of my favorites (some non-photography apps too) and why I like them!

#1: Instagram (free on App-Store and Android Market)
For me, this one goes without saying as my favorite app. I love browsing photographs! And Instagram is a great place to follow people whose photographs inspire you! You can add different filters to your image before you post it to Instagram!

Here are three of my favorite Instagrammers that I follow(@djaeoutlaw, @georgi77, and @jacksatron). Their images are always beautiful and inspiring! (if you’re on Instagram and want to follow me, my username is @beckieGkengle)

#2: Hipstamatic ($1.99 on App Store with lots of .99 in-app upgrades)
Hipstamatic is a fun app that lets you choose your lens, film and flash! It comes standard with a few different lenses, films, and a flash or two, that make many different combinations for taking some fun images, so you wouldn’t even have to purchase any of the Hipstapaks! You can choose to share directly to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, and Tumbler.

#3: VSCOCAM (.99 on App Store)
This app actually allows you to be able to edit the exposure, white balance, contrast, etc (to an extent), and also gives you 10 different vintage-type filters that you can apply to your image after you make your exposure adjustments. There are 3 B&W filters and 7 color filters, giving a nice variety to make your image stand out.

#4: Luminance (.99 on App Store)
Luminance is another app that gives you a lot of control over the exposure, white balance, contrast, etc on your images! This app also has filters, but in my opinion, this app does better on just making those basic minor adjustments than using the filters. After I make those adjustments, I will take it to another app to add the filters and such that I want to use.

#5: Over ($1.99 in App-Store, with one .99 in-app purchase for extra fonts)
This app is one that I just recently discovered. It’s an app that you can use to add text to an image. It has a variety of fonts and text colors, and is a great app for when you want to add a text watermark to your cell phone images before putting them on websites such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

#6: Dropbox (free on App Store and Android Market)
This is a great app for sharing images and files between your devices and your computer! With the tap of a finger, I can easily upload all of my photos from my iPhone so I can use them on my computer.

#7: Werdsmith (free on App Store or $2.99 for the full version)
I use this app to write my blog posts for EE and my own blog before I actually post them to the blog. This way I can write where/when ever I am inspired to write. I can have multiple projects going on at one time.

#8: Diptic (.99 on App Store)
This is a photo collage app. It’s fun for when you want to post a series of photos on Facebook or Instagram. It has many different photo layout options to choose from!

#9: Soundhound (free on App Store or $6.99 for full, no ad version)
I love this app! Have you ever heard a song and wondered who sang it and what it’s called? This app “listens” to the song for you and searches its database to give you the artist’s name and the song title. It also links to iTunes so you can listen to a snippet or just download the song!

#10: The Weather Channel (free on App Store and Android Market, or no-ad version for $1.99-I think)
I am somewhat obsessed with checking the weather (as I think most photographers are)! I bought the full version because I kept accidentally clicking on the ads. You can choose 10 favorite cities. And it shows up to ten days of weather predictions with hi and low temps, and also shows sunrise and sunset (perfect for figuring out when golden hour is)!

#11: Tweetcaster (free on App Store and Android Market or $4.99 for full, ad-free version)
I love Twitter! It’s a fun way to follow and get a peek into the lives of your favorite photographers, artists, friends, and many other people! However, I’m not a fan of the actual Twitter app (not really sure why, I just don’t like it). With Tweetcaster you can customize colors, ways you view your timeline, and you can even “zip” certain people if you want to keep following them, but don’t want to see everything they post.

And I almost forgot #12 (which really probably is #1) Pandora (free on App Store and Android Market, or $3.99/month with no ads!)
I love music! And Pandora is the perfect music app for me. It lets me choose stations based off of my favorite artists, and allows me to skip songs if I don’t like them! I’ve upgraded to the no-ad version, and I have non-stop music all day long! (Yes, I have a different taste in music than most! ;-))

So, there you have a few of my favorite apps! What are some of yours?

  1. Thanks for sharing your favorites! I like and use a lot of the same apps as well. I seriously have a problem when it comes to Instagram, lol! I travel a lot for my job at DISH, so it’s definitely fun to take a bunch of different pictures in all the different places I go to and share them with all of my friends. As far as my other favorites go they include; Chase, DISH Remote Access, TurboCollage and Pinterest. That second app is the one I use the most though, because I do find myself pretty bored in airports and such when I’m not taking pictures. I have a Sling Adapter at home, so I’m actually able to use that app to watch all of my favorite shows, live or recorded, anywhere I am in the world. It’s definitely my favorite time-killer app! 🙂

    • I know what you mean about having a problem with Instagram! Hehehe! And I tried the DISH remote access once but couldn’t get it to work. I’ll have to try it again! Thanks!
