This is a great tutorial for those just getting started with Photoshop Elements and for those who haveĀ been using it a while and may have forgotten the quick/simple fixes. Today I am sharing about photo filter adjustment layer. It is a very useful adjustment that often gets overlooked, yet can be highly effective.
Step 1: Open image in Full Edit mode. Click on the half white/half black circle at the bottom (in PSE 8 and 9) or top (PSE 7 and earlier) of the Layers palette. Adjustment layers will drop down or up; choose Photo Filter.
Step 2: When the Photo filter dialogue box pops up, click on the Filter drop down menu and choose the filter that would best suit your image.
Step 4: There are three warming filters and three cooling filters plus a number of color filters. You can change the strength of the filter, stronger or weaker. I chose the first warming filter and kept the density at 25%.
Step 5: Lower the layer opacity to suit your image. You can also use the layer mask to brush some of the effect off parts of your image with a soft, black brush.
Here is a before and after. This image didn’t need much warming and the filter was a very quick fix.
I am editing to add that Michelle from Love That Shot does some pretty neat things with photo filters! If you are a member, check out the tutorials. If you are not a member, think about trying it out. Great information, discounted and free products, wonderful forum board.
Ugh…..I totally don’t get PSE. I have PSE6 for the Mac and am so lost. I will soon be registering for one of your workshops. I need major help. I just don’t get it and I keep trying to teach myself but it’s so not working.
((hugs)) Lisa, you are not alone! Many people feel the same way. I felt like that when I first got started too. You will get there!
Great tip. Thanks
Thanks, Yvette. It is a VERY simple tip, but one that can be an easy fix for problematic pictures and one that many people forget about.
Amanda, thank you so much for this tutorial….I can’t believe I never knew about this simple fix! I learn something new from you everyday and I love it! <3
